Machines vs free weights: Which is better?

Since walking into a gym for the first time to build strength for rugby I was told to work on all the basic moves to gain size.

So, I focused on all the big muscle groups with squats, bench presses and deadlifts, slowly building up to lift heavier to stand strong in the scrums and carry the ball forward in the field of play. I shunned the so-called shaping movements because I was told they don’t have a legitimate place in training and that I needed the difficulty of free weights to grow.
