Bodybuilding fans will have the right to choose a People’s Champion at this year’s Mr. Olympia contest taking place on the 14th and the 15th of September in Las Vegas.
According to Robin Chang, promoter of the Olympia Weekend, the latest method of picking a winner by the people will see their favourite athlete receiving a People’s Champion Award on the night of the competition in Las Vegas.
The process will consist of the following:
- Fans will judge each competitor. The scores will be counted as part of the final decision making the fans part of the judging process.
- The IFBB judges’ scorecards will be visible to fans before the grand finale.
- There is a possibility of the 2018 Mr. Olympia People’s Champion. This will happen if fans choose a different winner than the IFBB judges at the competition.
“Fans in attendance at The Orleans Arena will have access to a judge’s scorecard on a mobile device via a special code,” said Chang. “They will have the ability to judge each and every competitor on stage at both Friday’s prejudging round and Saturday’s finals. If the fans choose someone different that of the judges, then that competitor will be deemed the People’s Champion, which is more akin to a Most Muscular or Best Poser award.”
“The audience at a bodybuilding contest is different from those of the UFC, the NFL, and other sports,” IFBB Pro League President Jim Manion said in a statement. “The fans are more than spectators—they live bodybuilding and fitness. Just go to any show and you can see it isn’t your normal passive crowd. Many compete or have competed before. They are experts and know what to look for, and I believe they deserve a say in the final outcome.”
In the event the athlete earning the fan vote does not win the title, that competitor will be crowned the 2018 People’s Champion.
