A female bodybuilder, who has not been named, was arrested after publishing revealing photos of herself on social media this week.
According to Iranian media the athlete was not able to post a $50 000 (47 000 euros) bail and was subsequently jailed by the Islamic Republic where the term ‘nude’ can refer to women not wearing headscarves or showing parts of their arms and legs that must be covered in public.
The woman took part in an international bodybuilding competition in September last year.
Bodybuilding as a sport has become increasingly popular across the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Iranian women are allowed to participate in international sporting events but must adhere to Islamic rules on clothing at all times.
