Bodybuilder dies of malaria

Members of the South African bodybuilding community were shocked at yet another death of a popular athlete this week.

Bodybuilder Joao Celestino died on Monday, 25 September after he contracted cerebral malaria, a severe form of the mosquito-borne infectious disease, in the Ivory Coast. Celestino had just won the 90kg Plus at the IFBB Grand Prix in Nice, France.

He qualified to compete at the Arnold Classic USA in 2018 and only recently moved to South Africa to prep for the show under the watchful eye of coach Vic Alley.

Celestino leaves behind his wife and two children (18) and (2). Sincere condolences to the Celestino family, fellow athletes and friends.

Celestino’s passing follows the death of IFBB SA Mixed Couples champion Monique van Emmenis on Sunday.
